People who play video games are at risk of damaging their hearing due to potentially unsafe sound levels, a study has found.
The new review suggests that gamers play for long periods of time with the volume turned up, beyond safe limits.
It says this could contribute to irreversible hearing loss or tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears.
The paper, published in BMJ Public Health, reviewed 14 studies which in total involved more than 50,000 people.
The researchers urge more public health efforts to raise awareness of the issues for gamers, in the same way that has been done for live music and headphones.
Of course, gamers could turn down the volume while playing to minimise the risk, but the study suggests that part of the problem is the length of time people spend being exposed to high volumes.
For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) says adults can safely be exposed to 80 decibels (dB) for 40 hours a week, which is about the noise level of a doorbell.
Above that level, however, the safe amount of exposure to noise drops rapidly.
Adults should only listen to 90dB for four hours a week, and 95dB for one hour and 15 minutes a week, according to the WHO guidance. For children, the thresholds are even lower.
One of the studies evaluated by researchers found average headphone noise levels in four shooting games to be between 88.5 and 91.2dB.
Another study found that impulse sounds – short loud bursts such as shooting noises – reached 119dB.
The paper also found that in three separate studies, boys were recorded as playing videos games more often than girls for longer stints and at higher volumes.
Some studies found correlations between gaming and hearing loss while other linked the activity with tinnitus. These used a combination of self-reported data and hearing tests to evaluate hearing.
The authors acknowledge that more research should be done to establish a stronger link between gaming and hearing loss.
They add that the impact of e-sports, geographic region, sex and age should be looked into more closely.
Some of the studies they looked at went back to the 1990s, when the gaming world was very different to now.
Only two papers published in the last 10 years objectively measured sound levels from video games or gaming centres, which are like video game arcades and popular in Asia.
But the authors conclude that “the limited available evidence suggests that gaming may be a common source of unsafe listening”.
They say: “The findings suggest that there may be a need to prioritise interventions, such as initiatives focused on education and awareness of the potential risks of gaming, that can help promote safe listening among gamers.”
Tips for protecting your hearing while gaming
Turn the volume down – 50% is a good benchmark. Some games let you adjust sound levels for special effects and music
Take regular breaks – at least 5 minutes every hour – to give your ears a rest
If you’re gaming in a noisy environment, use noise-cancelling headphones and don’t exceed safe volume limits
Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on Wednesday visited the Maa Mangla Basti in Bhubaneswar in Odisha. Gates arrived in the Odisha capital on Tuesday night
On Wednesday, Gates is scheduled to attend several programmes, including one with focus on use of artificial intelligence for farmers.
On his visit, the Microsoft co-founder will meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and attend other functions related to the ‘Jaga Mission’ (scheme for development of slums), the ‘Mukta’ scheme (localised employment opportunities for the urban poor) and ‘Mission Shakti’, officials said.
Since 2017, Odisha government’s Department of Agriculture and Farmer Empowerment and the Fisheries and Animal Resource Department have collaborated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for innovation in data-driven decision-making, they said.
Earlier on February 25, in his blog ‘Gate Notes’, Gates mentioned that he will be visiting a low-income community in Odisha where a government programme is helping women get the skills to fulfil government construction contracts. “Since 2018, this programme has helped 22,000 groups of women deliver on more than 52,000 projects including building roads, drains, and toilets,” he wrote.
Sharing his admiration for India’s innovative spirit, especially digital public infrastructure, or DPI, Gates said that during his trip, he will get to see India’s DPI in action.
“I’ll visit an agricultural monitoring center in the state of Odisha where government officials use DPI to give farmers real-time guidance. Thanks to Aadhaar, this center is able to maintain a registry of 7.5 million farmers—even if they don’t own land—and their crops, so officials can keep track of who is growing what (and, therefore, what kind of farming advice they need). It has also developed a chatbot that makes it easy for farmers to get the latest information about their crops, using AI to tailor content to their particular needs and in their local language,” he added.
‘India’s greatest gift is its ability to innovate’
Bill Gates, in his blog, said that India’s most important contributions to the world is its ability to innovate. “India’s greatest gift is its ability to innovate. This country has a long history of important breakthroughs. (Mathematicians in ancient India are widely credited with introducing the decimal system for numbers.) More recently, India has made advances that are saving and improving millions of lives in India and around the world.”
Gates will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India and said that their main topic of discussion would be to learn how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, can continue to help India with its ideas.
“The Gates Foundation has been a partner in some of these efforts, and I’m visiting this week to learn about how we can continue working with India to help its ideas and inventions reach everyone who needs them, no matter where they live. This will be a main topic when I meet with Prime Minister Modi this week,” he wrote.
A tablet is a wireless, portable personal computer with a touchscreen interface. The tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer, but larger than a smartphone.
A tablet PC — also known as a tablet computer or simply tablet — is a smaller version of a laptop computer and a larger version of a smartphone. All tablets feature a touchscreen interface, allowing users to engage with the device using touch commands and easily access many applications without needing an external keyboard or mouse.
That said, users can connect an external keyboard or mouse to a tablet. In fact, many users prefer to work with an external input device for gaming, to create documents, access websites and do other tasks on a tablet.
Unlike many laptops, a tablet is a highly portable device, making it easy to carry and transport. And compared to a smartphone, tablets feature a larger form factor and larger screens, thus providing a larger and clearer display experience. Tablets also provide greater storage capacity and a longer battery life compared to smartphones.
Like both laptops and smartphones, tablets are built to work in online and offline modes. Depending on the model and country of operation, tablets are compatible with most wireless and cellular data networks.
Key characteristics of tablet PCs
One of the most important characteristics of tablet PCs is portability. Tablets are smaller and lighter than laptops, making it easy for users to carry them as needed. That said, tablets are too big to be carried in pockets or purses (like smartphones). Also, if the tablet is dropped, its screen can be damaged, so it’s advisable to store and carry it in a good quality carrying case.
Viewability is another key characteristic. Since tablets are larger than smartphones, they are more suitable for applications that require higher viewability, including applications involving graphics like games or photo editing. Depending on the application, users can choose 5-inch, 7-inch, 9-inch and 10-inch tablet screen sizes. Larger tablets (13-inch diagonal screen size) are also available.
All tablets feature a capacitive touchscreen interface and offer users various “action” options to access and use applications, such as slide, pinch, etc. In addition, many devices accept input from a pen or stylus, provide a virtual keyboard and can be connected to an external QWERTY keyboard or mouse to enhance usability.
Modern tablets provide multiple connectivity options, meaning they can connect to the internet using WiFi and cellular networks. Web browsing capabilities, web browsers and multimedia applications are also built into tablets.
Finally, tablet PCs can be used in both portrait and landscape mode, depending on the user’s requirement and application. The device incorporates an accelerometer with motion-sensing technology that can detect movement and tilt, which allows the screen to automatically rotate and change its mode to match the user’s needs.
What are the types of tablets?
Today, the most common type of tablet is the slate style, like Apple’s iPad, Microsoft’s Surface or Amazon’s Fire. External keyboards are available for most slate-style tablets, and some keyboards also function as docking stations for the devices.
Other styles of tablets include the following:
Convertible tablets
These typically have a display that rotates 180 degrees and can be folded to close, screen facing up, over an integrated hardware keyboard. Convertible models may allow user input through a variety of methods in addition to the hardware keyboard, including natural handwriting with a stylus or digital pen, or through a screen-based software keyboard.
Hybrid tablets
Sometimes referred to as a convertible notebook, a hybrid notebook or a 2-in-1 laptop, a hybrid tablet is like a regular notebook, but has a removable display that functions independently as a slate. The device can be used as both a laptop and a tablet since it offers the features of the former and the convenience and portability of the latter.
Rugged tablets
A slate-like model that is designed to withstand rough handling and extreme conditions, a rugged tablet is usually encased in a thick protective shell and has a shock-protected hard drive. Rugged tablets are commonly used in manufacturing facilities, oil rigs, mines, construction sites, military operations and any other environment characterized by harsh conditions like chemical spills, extreme temperatures, shocks, vibrations, dust, humidity and water exposure.
History and evolution of tablets
The idea of tablet computing is generally credited to Alan Kay of Xerox, who sketched out the idea of a Dynabook in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, the Dynabook was never actually built and the original predecessor of the tablet PC was the RAND Tablet. This device was developed in the 1960s and included a handwriting recognition program called GRAIL that allowed users to input text and shapes into a larger computer.
In 1987, two companies introduced tablet computers: Cambridge Computer (Z88) and Linus Technologies (Write-Top). The Z88 included an internal floppy drive, accepted input through a keyboard, and was more portable than the Write-Top. The Write-Top accepted input through a stylus, making it one of the first computing devices to do so.
The first widely sold tablet computer was Apple Computer’s Newton, which was first shipped in 1993 and touted as a personal digital assistant. The Newton was not a commercial success and Apple discontinued it in 1998.
Since those early days, technological advances in battery life, display resolution, handwriting recognition software, memory and wireless internet access have made tablets a viable computing option. Today, consumers and businesses have a range of tablet devices and operating systems to choose from. Collectively, tablets have made numerous technological advances and gained increasing popularity in enterprise BYOD environments.
Apple is largely responsible for igniting tablets’ current popularity, having released its first-generation iPad in April 2010. Since then, Apple has developed a family of associated devices, including the iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad Mini.
The US Department of Justice announced today that it’s suing Apple for illegally monopolizing the smartphone market and using its position “to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants.”
In the 88-page suit, which was filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the Justice Department alleges that Apple is using a variety of unfair tactics to entrench its market position and restrict innovation. These include blocking so-called “Super Apps,” which would make it easier for customers to switch between smartphone platforms, imposing an effective ban on cloud streaming services for content like games, degrading the experience for cross-platform messaging apps, restricting the compatibility of non-Apple smartwatches with its phones, and barring third-party developers from accessing the iPhone’s tap-to-pay feature to offer their own digital wallets.
The lawsuit comes as Apple has been forced to reevaluate many of these long-standing policies in the European Union due to the bloc’s Digital Markets Act. Although European regulators decided against forcing Apple to open up iMessage, the company is nevertheless now required to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone in the EU and to allow developers access to the device’s tap-to-pay functionality.

The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is a magnificent area with high mountain ranges, glaciers and is actually the most glaciated part of the European Alps.
Visiting this area can be done relatively easy by car and if you want to go up, by train up to 3,400 metres above sea level, the highest train ride in Europe, the Jungfrau Railway is very impressive (and expensive!).
The area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its unique and wide range of flora and fauna and geological importance regarding the creating of the High Alps.
To understand the new smart watched and other pro devices of recent focus, we should look to Silicon Valley and the quantified movement.
Apple’s Watch records exercise, tracks our moves throughout the day, checks the amount of time we are stood up and reminds us to get up and move around if we have been sat for too long – let’s not forget Tim Cooks “sitting is the new coolness” line.
To its detractors, love at first sight must be an illusion – the wrong term for what is simply infatuation, or a way to sugarcoat lust.

And unlike most cheap ultrabooks, the notebook is sturdy, has a fingerprint reader, and comes with a convenient and easily replaceable USB-C charger.

Who these are for: If you prefer macOS or need limited tech support, a MacBook is a safe bet. The 16-inch models usually offer the best performance of size, weight, and speed. They’re great for writers, office workers, commuters, and college students.
Why we liked the 16-inch Model:
The 2021 MacBook Air uses an Apple M1 chip that delivers great performance and fantastic battery life. And the keyboard is finally improved with the new switches. But the Air’s light weight, solid construction, and industry-trailing support make it a decent laptop, especially if you also own an iPhone or other Apple devices.

As you’re tapping, scrolling, and swiping on your phone, you probably don’t give much thought to the fact that your apps are consuming electricity – just that they’re chipping away at your battery life.
Before you click away, disappointed that I brought up something as practical and boring as time management, hear me out. My intent is not to crush your spirits.
The average U.S. iPhone owner uses 1-2 gigabytes of LTE data per month, according to some studies. That data comes at an energy cost that’s opaque, because we can’t see it directly.
You can’t look to your peers in the industry, because all they’re going to tell you is that they are killing it, crushing it, changing the world.
To its detractors, love at first sight must be an illusion – the wrong term for what is simply infatuation, or a way to sugarcoat lust.
Take a social media hiatus. According to a recent survey from Everyday Health, 60 to 70 percent of young adults say they check their social media platforms at least daily. Why not dial that back for the holidays?
Stick to your new routine. It’s tempting to shake up your typical schedule when the holidays come around, but women’s health expert and BINTO founder Suzie Welsh emphasizes the importance of routine amid the revelry.
Be intentional about fitness. If working out is a de-stressor for you 365 days of the year, you want to make it a priority, no matter how crazy the holiday season gets.
1. There is always the New Project, the New Opportunity.
Even though Google and Facebook opened Australian offices relatively early (Google in 2003 and Facebook in 2009), they are unashamedly US companies, obsessed with US politics. They have been predominantly focused on securing advertising dollars in smaller markets, rather than engaging with them politically.
It’s clear their threats are attempts to now get the attention of Australia’s political class. And if the platforms follow through.
2. To be successful, follow your passion and see where it leads you. All you have to do is jump right in!
Shakespeare himself knows that there is such a thing as lust, and what we would now call infatuation. He’s no fool. People who exhibit the perfectionism are fearful of failure.
Google and Facebook were comparatively passive when the draft code first emerged in 2019, as part of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Digital Platforms Inquiry. Providing advance notice of any changes.
Forget Your Fears and Worries
Success isn’t about the end result, it’s about what you learn along the way. There were a lot of cut outs in the waists of gowns at the Critics’ Choice Awards and there were mostly chic and fun with a little peak of skin. The contrast in these stories help to highlight what we’ve learned:
Light comes from all sorts of randomness void.
It’s a blessing, but also a terrible defect sensational.
Smart phones are a massive energy drain.
