People who play video games are at risk of damaging their hearing due to potentially unsafe sound levels, a study has found.
The new review suggests that gamers play for long periods of time with the volume turned up, beyond safe limits.
It says this could contribute to irreversible hearing loss or tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears.
The paper, published in BMJ Public Health, reviewed 14 studies which in total involved more than 50,000 people.
The researchers urge more public health efforts to raise awareness of the issues for gamers, in the same way that has been done for live music and headphones.
Of course, gamers could turn down the volume while playing to minimise the risk, but the study suggests that part of the problem is the length of time people spend being exposed to high volumes.
For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) says adults can safely be exposed to 80 decibels (dB) for 40 hours a week, which is about the noise level of a doorbell.
Above that level, however, the safe amount of exposure to noise drops rapidly.
Adults should only listen to 90dB for four hours a week, and 95dB for one hour and 15 minutes a week, according to the WHO guidance. For children, the thresholds are even lower.
One of the studies evaluated by researchers found average headphone noise levels in four shooting games to be between 88.5 and 91.2dB.
Another study found that impulse sounds – short loud bursts such as shooting noises – reached 119dB.
The paper also found that in three separate studies, boys were recorded as playing videos games more often than girls for longer stints and at higher volumes.
Some studies found correlations between gaming and hearing loss while other linked the activity with tinnitus. These used a combination of self-reported data and hearing tests to evaluate hearing.
The authors acknowledge that more research should be done to establish a stronger link between gaming and hearing loss.
They add that the impact of e-sports, geographic region, sex and age should be looked into more closely.
Some of the studies they looked at went back to the 1990s, when the gaming world was very different to now.
Only two papers published in the last 10 years objectively measured sound levels from video games or gaming centres, which are like video game arcades and popular in Asia.
But the authors conclude that “the limited available evidence suggests that gaming may be a common source of unsafe listening”.
They say: “The findings suggest that there may be a need to prioritise interventions, such as initiatives focused on education and awareness of the potential risks of gaming, that can help promote safe listening among gamers.”

Earlier on February 25, in his blog ‘Gate Notes’, Gates mentioned that he will be visiting a low-income community in Odisha where a government programme is helping women get the skills to fulfil government construction contracts. “Since 2018, this programme has helped 22,000 groups of women deliver on more than 52,000 projects including building roads, drains, and toilets,” he wrote.
Sharing his admiration for India’s innovative spirit, especially digital public infrastructure, or DPI, Gates said that during his trip, he will get to see India’s DPI in action.
“I’ll visit an agricultural monitoring center in the state of Odisha where government officials use DPI to give farmers real-time guidance. Thanks to Aadhaar, this center is able to maintain a registry of 7.5 million farmers—even if they don’t own land—and their crops, so officials can keep track of who is growing what (and, therefore, what kind of farming advice they need). It has also developed a chatbot that makes it easy for farmers to get the latest information about their crops, using AI to tailor content to their particular needs and in their local language,” he added.

Gates will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India and said that their main topic of discussion would be to learn how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, can continue to help India with its ideas.
“The Gates Foundation has been a partner in some of these efforts, and I’m visiting this week to learn about how we can continue working with India to help its ideas and inventions reach everyone who needs them, no matter where they live. This will be a main topic when I meet with Prime Minister Modi this week,” he wrote.

What are the types of tablets?

Rugged tablets
A slate-like model that is designed to withstand rough handling and extreme conditions, a rugged tablet is usually encased in a thick protective shell and has a shock-protected hard drive. Rugged tablets are commonly used in manufacturing facilities, oil rigs, mines, construction sites, military operations and any other environment characterized by harsh conditions like chemical spills, extreme temperatures, shocks, vibrations, dust, humidity and water exposure.
History and evolution of tablets
The idea of tablet computing is generally credited to Alan Kay of Xerox, who sketched out the idea of a Dynabook in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, the Dynabook was never actually built and the original predecessor of the tablet PC was the RAND Tablet. This device was developed in the 1960s and included a handwriting recognition program called GRAIL that allowed users to input text and shapes into a larger computer.
In 1987, two companies introduced tablet computers: Cambridge Computer (Z88) and Linus Technologies (Write-Top). The Z88 included an internal floppy drive, accepted input through a keyboard, and was more portable than the Write-Top. The Write-Top accepted input through a stylus, making it one of the first computing devices to do so.
The first widely sold tablet computer was Apple Computer’s Newton, which was first shipped in 1993 and touted as a personal digital assistant. The Newton was not a commercial success and Apple discontinued it in 1998.
Since those early days, technological advances in battery life, display resolution, handwriting recognition software, memory and wireless internet access have made tablets a viable computing option. Today, consumers and businesses have a range of tablet devices and operating systems to choose from. Collectively, tablets have made numerous technological advances and gained increasing popularity in enterprise BYOD environments.

Apple is largely responsible for igniting tablets’ current popularity, having released its first-generation iPad in April 2010. Since then, Apple has developed a family of associated devices, including the iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad Mini.
The US Department of Justice announced today that it’s suing Apple for illegally monopolizing the smartphone market and using its position “to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants.”
In the 88-page suit, which was filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the Justice Department alleges that Apple is using a variety of unfair tactics to entrench its market position and restrict innovation. These include blocking so-called “Super Apps,” which would make it easier for customers to switch between smartphone platforms, imposing an effective ban on cloud streaming services for content like games, degrading the experience for cross-platform messaging apps, restricting the compatibility of non-Apple smartwatches with its phones, and barring third-party developers from accessing the iPhone’s tap-to-pay feature to offer their own digital wallets.
The lawsuit comes as Apple has been forced to reevaluate many of these long-standing policies in the European Union due to the bloc’s Digital Markets Act. Although European regulators decided against forcing Apple to open up iMessage, the company is nevertheless now required to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone in the EU and to allow developers access to the device’s tap-to-pay functionality.

The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is a magnificent area with high mountain ranges, glaciers and is actually the most glaciated part of the European Alps.
Visiting this area can be done relatively easy by car and if you want to go up, by train up to 3,400 metres above sea level, the highest train ride in Europe, the Jungfrau Railway is very impressive (and expensive!).
