Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates visits world’s tallest statue in Gujarat

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on Wednesday visited the Maa Mangla Basti in Bhubaneswar in Odisha. Gates arrived in the Odisha capital on Tuesday night

On Wednesday, Gates is scheduled to attend several programmes, including one with focus on use of artificial intelligence for farmers.

On his visit, the Microsoft co-founder will meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and attend other functions related to the ‘Jaga Mission’ (scheme for development of slums), the ‘Mukta’ scheme (localised employment opportunities for the urban poor) and ‘Mission Shakti’, officials said.

Since 2017, Odisha government’s Department of Agriculture and Farmer Empowerment and the Fisheries and Animal Resource Department have collaborated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for innovation in data-driven decision-making, they said.

Earlier on February 25, in his blog ‘Gate Notes’, Gates mentioned that he will be visiting a low-income community in Odisha where a government programme is helping women get the skills to fulfil government construction contracts. “Since 2018, this programme has helped 22,000 groups of women deliver on more than 52,000 projects including building roads, drains, and toilets,” he wrote.

Sharing his admiration for India’s innovative spirit, especially digital public infrastructure, or DPI, Gates said that during his trip, he will get to see India’s DPI in action.

“I’ll visit an agricultural monitoring center in the state of Odisha where government officials use DPI to give farmers real-time guidance. Thanks to Aadhaar, this center is able to maintain a registry of 7.5 million farmers—even if they don’t own land—and their crops, so officials can keep track of who is growing what (and, therefore, what kind of farming advice they need). It has also developed a chatbot that makes it easy for farmers to get the latest information about their crops, using AI to tailor content to their particular needs and in their local language,” he added.

‘India’s greatest gift is its ability to innovate’

Bill Gates, in his blog, said that India’s most important contributions to the world is its ability to innovate. “India’s greatest gift is its ability to innovate. This country has a long history of important breakthroughs. (Mathematicians in ancient India are widely credited with introducing the decimal system for numbers.) More recently, India has made advances that are saving and improving millions of lives in India and around the world.”

Gates will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India and said that their main topic of discussion would be to learn how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, can continue to help India with its ideas.

“The Gates Foundation has been a partner in some of these efforts, and I’m visiting this week to learn about how we can continue working with India to help its ideas and inventions reach everyone who needs them, no matter where they live. This will be a main topic when I meet with Prime Minister Modi this week,” he wrote.

The US Department of Justice announced today that it’s suing Apple for illegally monopolizing the smartphone market and using its position “to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants.”

In the 88-page suit, which was filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the Justice Department alleges that Apple is using a variety of unfair tactics to entrench its market position and restrict innovation. These include blocking so-called “Super Apps,” which would make it easier for customers to switch between smartphone platforms, imposing an effective ban on cloud streaming services for content like games, degrading the experience for cross-platform messaging apps, restricting the compatibility of non-Apple smartwatches with its phones, and barring third-party developers from accessing the iPhone’s tap-to-pay feature to offer their own digital wallets.

The lawsuit comes as Apple has been forced to reevaluate many of these long-standing policies in the European Union due to the bloc’s Digital Markets Act. Although European regulators decided against forcing Apple to open up iMessage, the company is nevertheless now required to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone in the EU and to allow developers access to the device’s tap-to-pay functionality.

Electric Car Owners to Pay Road Tax from 2025, Hunt Announces

Starting in 2025, electric vehicle (EV) owners will be subject to vehicle excise duty (VED), commonly known as road tax, as announced by the chancellor. This move has raised concerns within the industry about its potential to hinder the transition to electric cars.

Meanwhile, owners of traditional vehicles may face an earlier increase in running costs, with a planned hike in fuel duty in March 2023 possibly adding 12p per litre to current petrol and diesel prices.

The Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts a £5.7 billion increase in receipts next year, assuming a duty rise aligned with inflation and the expiration of the one-year 5p cut implemented in Rishi Sunak’s previous budget.

Although the OBR predicts a possible 23% surge in fuel duty, successive Conservative chancellors have consistently frozen duty hikes since 2011. It remains to be seen if Hunt will continue this trend in the upcoming spring budget.

Hunt’s autumn statement did not unveil any immediate changes or broader reforms regarding fuel duty, contrary to some expectations. However, officials acknowledge that as electric vehicles become more prevalent on UK roads, the Treasury’s revenue from VED and fuel duty will decline substantially. Consequently, new revenue streams will need to be explored.

Many motoring organizations view a system of road pricing based on distance traveled as the ideal long-term replacement for current motoring taxes. Yet, implementing such a system has historically been politically sensitive.

As the proportion of battery-electric vehicles (EVs) on UK roads continues to rise, revenue to the Treasury from both VED and fuel duty is expected to decrease. Furthermore, the UK’s impending ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 adds urgency to this fiscal challenge.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in his autumn statement: “Due to the Office of Budget Responsibility’s forecast that half of all new vehicles will be electric by 2025, I’ve decided that electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from vehicle excise duty to ensure fairness in our motoring tax system.”

VED rates currently vary based on emissions and vehicle age, with zero-emission vehicles enjoying exemption. EVs will initially be charged the lowest band for new cars – currently £10 – before transitioning to standard rates. This change may affect the attractiveness of EVs, particularly as more expensive models face additional surcharges.

Despite these adjustments, some incentives for businesses to adopt cleaner vehicles will persist. Hunt stated, “Company car tax rates will remain lower for electric vehicles, and I will limit rate increases to 1% annually for three years starting in 2025.”

Industry reactions to the VED imposition on EVs have been mixed. While some express disappointment, acknowledging the challenge of maintaining EV affordability and environmental benefits, others welcome the move as a fair contribution toward road-related costs.
